Liberty Bell

Liberty Bell

The original Liberty Bell, cast in 1752, remains an enduring symbol of courage and freedom. In celebration of the nation’s Bicentennial, the White Chapel Foundry in London produced 100 official replicas in 1975, two for each state. California’s replicas were awarded to the cities of La Verne and Bakersfield, making La Verne one of only two cities in the state to receive this historic symbol.

La Verne’s Liberty Bell replica was secured through the efforts of Robert G. Harris, the Bicentennial Committee, and dedicated community members who acted quickly to obtain the bell. To fund the purchase, the Committee launched the “Own a Piece of Liberty” campaign, inviting residents, especially students, to contribute nickels and dimes at schools and community events. Supporters also purchased commemorative stickers, patches, and medallions. Donors were recognized with honorary certificates, making the bell a true community-funded landmark.

When it first arrived, the bell traveled throughout La Verne mounted on a truck bed, appearing at local events and celebrations as a symbol of unity and patriotism. Today, it is proudly displayed at City Hall, where visitors can experience a tangible connection to the nation’s history.

More than just a replica, La Verne’s Liberty Bell represents the spirit of a community that came together to celebrate America’s 200th anniversary. It continues to serve as a lasting reminder that, here in La Verne, freedom still rings.
