LA VERNE, CA – After a distinguished period of service as Fire Chief of the La Verne Fire Department, Fire Chief Chris Nigg will be departing the City of La Verne to assume the same role with the City of Fountain Valley.
During his tenure, Chief Nigg led the department through significant operational and organizational advancements that strengthened emergency response, workforce readiness, and regional integration. Most notably, his leadership resulted in the reopening of Fire Station 3, the implementation of an efficient ambulance operator program, and the establishment of a comprehensive succession plan to ensure long-term organizational stability. He also oversaw the completion of staffing and deployment of a full-time ladder truck company, expanded and formalized a specialized technical rescue program, and achieved measurable improvements in response times across the City.
Chief Nigg worked collaboratively with regional partners to enhance automatic aid and mutual response agreements, improving service delivery and interoperability throughout the greater Los Angeles operational area. Internally, his tenure was marked by significant improvements in labor–management relations, fostering a culture of professionalism, trust, and shared accountability focused on serving the community.
In addition to these operational accomplishments, Chief Nigg guided the department through department-wide strategic planning, community risk assessment and standards of cover development, fiscally responsible budget planning, and long-term capital and apparatus planning. His leadership emphasized transparency, firefighter safety, operational readiness, and public trust.
Beyond the City of La Verne, Chief Nigg played a key role in advancing collaboration and preparedness across the broader Los Angeles operational area. Through his regional and statewide leadership roles, he supported interagency training initiatives, grant coordination, interoperable communications efforts, and legislative advocacy that benefited departments throughout the region while strengthening La Verne’s standing as a trusted public safety partner.
Reflecting on his service, Chief Nigg shared:
“Serving as the Fire Chief of the City of La Verne has been one of the greatest honors of my career. I am incredibly proud of the men and women of the La Verne Fire Department—their professionalism, dedication, and commitment to this community are exceptional. I am equally grateful to the La Verne community for its trust, support, and the opportunity to serve. Together, we accomplished meaningful work, and I will always take great pride in having been your Fire Chief.”
“We are grateful for Chief Nigg’s service and leadership, and for the trust he helped build within our community,” said Mayor Tim Hepburn. “Because of the strong foundation he leaves behind, the La Verne Fire Department remains well-positioned to move forward with confidence, ensuring continuity, stability, and a continued focus on protecting the safety and wellbeing of our residents.”
Representing the department’s firefighters, the La Verne Firefighters’ Association also shared the following statement:
“During his tenure, Chief Nigg led the La Verne Fire Department through much-needed modernization and helped establish a service model uncommon for a department of its size. His leadership encouraged professional growth, inspired involvement across all ranks, and strengthened the organization as a whole. The La Verne Firefighters’ Association extends its appreciation for his contributions and wishes him and his family continued success as he begins the next chapter of his career.”
Chief Nigg’s departure marks the conclusion of an impactful chapter for the Fire Department and the community it serves. The City of La Verne extends its sincere appreciation for his leadership and service and wishes him continued success in his next chapter.
“Chief Nigg will always be remembered as a team player, fierce advocate for effective fire prevention and service delivery, and as an innovative leader seeking continuous enhancement and protections for the fire and emergency medical services,” stated City Manager Ken Domer. “I greatly appreciated his service and leadership in La Verne and know he will contribute the same to Fountain Valley.”
To ensure continuity of leadership and emergency services, Deputy Fire Chief Brandon Coatney will assume the role of Acting Fire Chief starting on January 9, 2026, following Chief Nigg’s departure.
