Unfortunately, the City will be removing a large Coast Live Oak tree adjacent to the playground and bathroom at Lowell Brandt Park. A recent branch fall prompted the City’s Public Work’s Park Division to request a health assessment by the City’s arborist, West Coast Arborists.
The Arborist used ISA Best Management Practices for tree risk assessment. In addition, the Arborist used Sonic Tomography for the Level 3 Advanced Assessment. Based on current conditions, the assessment found the oak to be a high risk for trunk or stem failure and therefore, removal of the tree has been directed by the City Manager. The tree’s location adjacent to the playground area and bathrooms left the City no better option than full tree and stump removal, which has been requested as soon as possible. The area is currently cordoned off and warning signs posted.
The City will seek to replace the tree as soon as feasible. Fortunately, recent improvements to the park included an entirely new playground structure with a shade canopy. Thank you for your understanding of the need to remove this tree due to its deteriorated condition and potential hazard to park users.
